What is the best time to sow Canola?
Canola must be sown as soon as possible in the spring to avoid flowering during the hotter part of the summer. To have a uniform emergence the soil temperature must be close to 10°C.
What is the optimal depth that I need to plant the seed in the soil?
Optimal depth is ½ to 1 inch (1.25 to 2.5 cm). It is really important to ensure that you reach that depth, again for optimum emergence uniformity.
What is the optimal Nitrogen rate I need in Canola?
The recommendation is between 80 and 120 kg/ha. Canola has the ability to use nitrogen from a manure application and previous crops. Take advantage of that situation to save on Nitrogen chemical application if possible.
What is the time delay between two canola crops?
Canola needs at least a four year rotation to avoid diseases like Sclerotinia and Club root. Beware to have a good volunteer canola control as it could transmit disease as well as a full year crop.
Do I need a swather to harvest my Canola?
Canola can be harvested with a swather or direct combine. Some research shows that direct combining can have better yields than a swather. Many Ontario Canola Growers use direct combining with good results.
